National Sleep Foundation
A nonprofit organization that promotes public understanding of sleep and sleep disorders and supports sleep-related education, research and advocacy to improve public health and safety. This site includes information on Foundation activities, on-line brochures and other publications, and links to other sleep-related organizations.

American Academy of Sleep Medicine
AASM is a professional medical association representing practitioners of sleep medicine and sleep research. Among other resources, this site includes a listing of all U.S. AASM-accredited sleep disorder centers.

NASA Ames Fatigue Countermeasures Group
The Fatigue Group at NASA Ames Research Center has been performing field research of flight crew fatigue in various aviation operational environments since the early 1980's. The site includes information on research activities, educational workshops, and on-line publications, including the well-known Education and Training module (1.7 MB PDF download).

Sleep Home Pages
A site for those interested in the more technical or scientific sides of sleep. Includes information on sleep research societies as well as an on-line database of sleep-related publications.

Changes Needed in Nurses' Work Environment
A report from the National Academies concludes that changes are needed in nursing to best ensure patient safety. Areas to be addressed include management, organizational culture, staffing levels, and work hours.

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety
The AAAFTS is committed to "saving lives through research and education." The site features educational materials, on-line quizzes, and discussion forums on topics such as drowsy driving and driver education.

NIOSH Approaches on Shiftwork
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health offers Plain Language About Shiftwork, a publication that suggests a wide range of strategies for employers and workers to ease the burdens associated with shiftwork.

Caffeine Information
Polls tell us that 85% of Americans get a daily jolt of caffeine. This site is a great source of information and features a calculator for determining how much caffeine is in one's daily dose of coffee, soft drinks, and food.

Caffeine for the Sustainment of Performance
A report from the Committee on Military Nutrition answers questions regarding the efficacy, safety, doses and alternatives for caffeine. The report found that caffeine is useful in situations of sleep deprivation. A two page summary of the report is available as a downloadable PDF document.
