Meeting Aviations Fatigue Challenge
The current generation of ultra long-range aircraft brings new physiological
challenges to the people who operate them. A 1997 NASA study of 1,500
flight crew discovered that:
- Nearly 9 out
of 10 corporate operators identified fatigue as a moderate or serious
safety issue
- A significant
75% actually admitted to nodding off during a flight
- 61% of corporate
operators characterized fatigue as a common occurrence
While billions
of dollars are invested in advanced aircraft technology each year, often
little is done to address the potentially life-threatening risks of
pilot fatigue.
The
Solution
Based
on many years of scientific knowledge and operational application, the
experts at Alertness Solutions have created AvAlert®, a convenient
and customizable CD-ROM package aimed at countering the debilitating
effects of flight-related fatigue and circadian rhythm disruption.
Introduced
as a workshop series in collaboration with Gulfstream
Aerospace Corporation to improve operational safety, AvAlert generated
overwhelmingly positive feedback. Currently, through its innovative
"Leading
Edge" Safety Training Program, Bombardier
is distributing AvAlert to its operators.
What
is AvAlert?
AvAlert provides practical strategies and the tools and resources to
manage fatigue in operational settings.

AvAlert
includes the following:
- Multi-media presentations,
adaptable tools, and comprehensive resources to address issues such
as optimization of duty and rest scheduling, crew planning, and cockpit
rest policies
- Scientific findings
on sleep, circadian rhythms, performance, and results from NASA aviation
fatigue studies
- Management Communications
CD-ROM with brief presentation conveying the importance, benefits,
and requirements of an AMP to executive management
Do
you need AvAlert?
Corporate flight department personnel can use the Alertness
Management Safety Evaluation, created by Alertness Solutions
in collaboration with the Flight Safety Foundation, to assess their
current approach to addressing fatigue and alertness. (Requires
Adobe Acrobat
Reader, which can be downloaded for free.)
