Alertness Metrics Technology

Based on its NASA experience, Alertness Solutions’ scientists created AMT to provide an innovative approach for collecting objective data related to fatigue, alertness, safety, and performance in real world operational settings. Using state-of-the-art technology, such as the actigraph, and a validated, sensitive test of performance with a PDA, Alertness Solutions uses AMT to provide a streamlined and cost effective method to examine alertness issues in the workplace.

The actigraph is a wristwatch-like device that objectively measures 24-hr sleep/wake patterns and provides a valid and accurate determination of sleep quantity and quality. AMT also uses a specially programmed PDA (personal digital assistant) that collects daily log information on activities such as meals, sleep timing, exercise, and caffeine use. The PDA includes a simple five-minute reaction time test that is taken on a regular basis to assess performance.

Rather than relying on self-reports or anecdotes, which can be significantly different from actual performance and sleep, AMT provides organizations with empirical data. This objective information can be crucial in making challenging operational decisions involving scheduling issues, alertness strategies, 24/7 operations, and safety.

AMT CASE STUDY:

Hilton Hotels continually strives to provide services and an environment that helps frequent business travelers maximize their personal performance and productivity while away from home. In an innovative project to examine how travel affects frequent travelers productivity, Hilton engaged Alertness Solutions to conduct two complementary studies. The first component involved a 58-question, web based survey that was completed by 3,500 respondents. The second component, the Hilton Real Time Travel Study, was a first-ever study that examined business travelers’ performance during an actual trip. Using Alertness Solutions' AMT approach, this study collected objective and subjective (self-report) information from business travelers while they were on an actual trip. Hilton will be using the findings to provide travelers with strategies, recommendations, and services that will improve their productivity when traveling.
