Alertness Metrics Technology Based on its NASA experience, Alertness Solutions scientists created AMT to provide an innovative approach for collecting objective data related to fatigue, alertness, safety, and performance in real world operational settings. Using state-of-the-art technology, such as the actigraph, and a validated, sensitive test of performance with a PDA, Alertness Solutions uses AMT to provide a streamlined and cost effective method to examine alertness issues in the workplace. The actigraph is a wristwatch-like device that objectively measures 24-hr sleep/wake patterns and provides a valid and accurate determination of sleep quantity and quality. AMT also uses a specially programmed PDA (personal digital assistant) that collects daily log information on activities such as meals, sleep timing, exercise, and caffeine use. The PDA includes a simple five-minute reaction time test that is taken on a regular basis to assess performance. Rather than relying on self-reports or anecdotes, which can be significantly different from actual performance and sleep, AMT provides organizations with empirical data. This objective information can be crucial in making challenging operational decisions involving scheduling issues, alertness strategies, 24/7 operations, and safety.
